Firewise USA® Community
Walnut Mountain is a proud Firewise USA® recognized community — committed every year to protecting our homes, families, and forests from wildfire.
Our Commitment
Since 2009, Walnut Mountain has held the Firewise USA® designation — one of the longest-standing recognized communities in Georgia. This isn't a one-time award. Each year, our community must demonstrate ongoing action: completing a wildfire risk assessment, maintaining a community action plan, conducting resident education, and investing measurable work in reducing hazards right here on our properties and common areas.
That means taking annual, systematic steps to reduce the risks from brush, grass, and forest fires — not just once, but every year, as a community.
What Is Firewise USA®?
Firewise USA® is a program of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), developed in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior. It empowers residents in fire-prone areas to work together to reduce wildfire risk at the neighborhood level.
The program recognizes that wildfire is a community problem — not just an individual one. When neighbors take coordinated action, the whole neighborhood becomes safer. A single prepared home surrounded by unprepared ones is still at risk; a whole community working together changes the outcome.
Firewise USA® sites span more than 40 states, representing hundreds of thousands of households that have chosen to take wildfire preparedness seriously.
How the Program Works
Risk Assessment
Communities complete a wildfire risk assessment of the neighborhood — identifying vegetation hazards, access routes, water sources, and structural vulnerabilities.
Community Action Plan
An annual action plan identifies specific projects and goals for the year, from clearing defensible space around homes to improving emergency access.
Resident Education
At least one educational event each year keeps residents informed about fire behavior, home hardening, and evacuation readiness.
Mitigation Investment
The community documents a minimum level of mitigation investment — in volunteer labor, materials, or contracted work — directly reducing risk on the ground.
Why It Matters for Walnut Mountain
Protects Homes
Defensible space, ember-resistant vents, and cleared vegetation around structures dramatically reduce the chance of fire reaching a home.
Keeps Families Safer
Coordinated community preparedness means shared awareness, clearer evacuation routes, and neighbors who look out for one another.
Preserves the Land
Responsible land stewardship protects the forests, trails, and natural beauty that define Walnut Mountain — for residents today and generations ahead.
